Acupuncture in Kingsbridge, Chillington & Modbury, South Hams
At the root of Chinese Medicine is the idea that we already possess everything needed to be well. Acupuncture needles prompt the body to do what it already knows, gently nudging it in the right direction.
The treatment moves and rebalances your energy (or qi) to a smooth, unimpeded flow, leaving you feeling grounded, energised and reconnected.
A favourite part of my job is listening to people’s stories. Being let into different aspects of their lives always feels like a privilege. My clinic space is beautifully calm, peaceful and private, and my aim is that you always feel deeply listened to, understood and safe to be completely yourself.
Many factors lay the foundation for your current condition, so when you come in for your first acupuncture treatment at my clinic in the South Hams, I will ask for details of not only the immediate problem but also a full case history of past illnesses, hereditary conditions, your emotional state, general energy levels, exercise and so on.
I’ll also take your pulse on your wrist and look at the colour of your tongue - these diagnostic techniques help refine my treatment. Your treatment is individually tailored and will change each time you come in.
What’s it like coming in for acupuncture treatment?
The location and number of needles will change depending on how you are that day, but generally, the needles (usually any number between 4 and 14) are placed in your feet, lower legs, hands, lower arms and tummy.
The needles stay in for around 20 minutes, and while they are gently working their magic, I try to keep talking to a minimum. I feel it's important you're given time to be still and quiet, time to check in and reconnect with your body.
Once the needles are removed, I often suggest small changes that could be made to your diet or lifestyle based on Chinese Medical principles. I know how busy life is already, so anything I suggest will be practical tweaks that don't require a huge amount of time or energy to implement.
I usually recommend a course of treatments, around 4 to 6 weekly, depending on you and your health condition. Each treatment has a cumulative effect.
The goal of our treatments is not just to eliminate symptoms but to address the underlying patterns of disharmony that are causing your symptoms in the first place.

“I loved my pregnancy sessions with Jo. Not only is she super knowledgeable and experienced, she is also really kind and I felt very relaxed. Sessions definitely helped get my body in the zone, and baby arrived ahead of induction! Highly recommend, five stars.”
“When I commenced the treatment, I was experiencing a three or four day migraine at least monthly. I write this now with almost six migraine free months behind me. That represents the longest I have gone without a migraine in almost twenty years.
I can't really put into words how amazing and how liberating that feels, although if you suffer from migraines yourself you can probably imagine. I recommend this treatment and this practitioner with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence.”
“I have been receiving treatment for a severe tendon problem in my ankle and was able to walk without a crutch after only 2 treatments. During consultations with Jo she also discovered other imbalances in my system which she continues to treat and they are improving. Jo’s delightful, caring personality adds to the healing experience and I always feel better after treatment.”
“From the moment I arrived at Jo’s acupuncture clinic, I felt very looked after and comfortable. I do find it hard to talk about my fertility problems but Jo has a lovely manner and she listened carefully to all my physical and emotional symptoms so it was easy to open up to her.
The clinic itself is a safe, tranquil environment and my treatments have been very calming. In the short time that Jo has been treating me, my cycles have already regulated and I feel healthier and more much positive. I would definitely recommend her to anyone wanting some help and support on their fertility journey.”
“I have been treated by Jo a number of times over the past year. I have always found her to be thoughtful, kind and sensitive to my needs and concerns. She is an excellent acupuncturist and would highly recommend her care and treatment.”
“I had the pleasure of mentoring Jo both before she qualified and subsequently once she was working at my Clinic. I was always impressed with her grasp of the complexities of Chinese philosophy and how to use those concepts in treating patients.
She is a thoughtful and accomplished acupuncturist. I was sufficiently appreciative of her abilities that I was happy to leave my regular patients in her care as a locum when I went away on holiday.”
