Acupuncture for Fertility and IVF support in Kingsbridge, Chillington & Modbury
Acupuncture can support you whether you’re:
ready to have a baby
have been trying for a while
would like to prepare your body for pregnancy in the future
Can acupuncture help with my fertility?
There are three main ways in which acupuncture can support your fertility:
By balancing your hormones - research has shown that acupuncture stimulates the communication between your hypothalamus, pituitary and ovaries (HPO axis). Stimulating this communication helps with the regulation and production of your follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinising hormone (LH), both crucial in a healthy reproductive system.
By increasing blood flow to the uterus - using acupuncture points along the lower abdomen helps with blood flow to this area. In turn, this helps with endometrial lining, painful or heavy periods, follicular development, and egg quality, to name a few.
By bringing down stress levels - acupuncture switches off cortisol and adrenaline and brings your body back into rest and digest, the nervous state where everything works better (reproductive system, immune system, digestive system).
How often should I come for treatment?
I usually suggest doing weekly treatments for one whole menstrual cycle, so one a week for four weeks (depending on the length of your cycle). We then make a plan depending on what symptoms you're experiencing and at which stage of your cycle treatment would be most beneficial.
Can acupuncture help with IVF?
Yes! And preparation is key.
We know it takes around 90 days to impact egg and sperm quality, so ideally, you’d come for treatment three months before your IVF cycle begins. However, this is often not possible, so we work with whatever time we have to prepare - there will still be so much we can do together.
During our first consultation, we look at every aspect of you & your life - your sleep, digestion, menstrual cycle, vaginal health, diet, how much water you drink, illnesses, support structures etc. All these things we know can influence your health and, therefore, your fertility positively or negatively.
By supporting you to make small lifestyle changes (eg, sleep hygiene, eating more protein, addressing stress), along with regular acupuncture (usually coming for treatments once a week or twice a month), means when you start your IVF cycle, you’re in a really good place and ready to go.
When should I come for treatment during my IVF cycle?
Usually weekly so we can work alongside the drugs.
For example:
Through down regulation acupuncture can help with any headaches or sleep troubles that can be common in this phase
During stimulation acupuncture boosts blood and qi to help with follicular development and encourages the follicles to grow evenly on both sides.
After egg collection, treatments focus on reducing inflammation, improving circulation and digestion.
On the day of egg transfer if possible (only if it’s not stressful though!)
I also treat after transfer to help calm the mind and support you emotionally during the two-week wait.
How much does Acupuncture treatment for Fertility and IVF cost?
Your first treatment, which lasts 75 minutes, costs £70
Follow-up treatments last around 45 minutes and cost £55 each.
